AUSTIN, TEXAS. - Seattle Sounders FC 2 (12-11-3, 39 points) fell to Austin Aztex (9-13-3, 30 points) on the road Saturday by a final score of 2-1. The Rave Green went down 2-0 after just 34 minutes, but pulled a goal back via native Texan Sam Garza's 44th-minute goal just before the break. Though unable to pick up a result, S2 moved one point closer to clinching a playoff position due to a Timbers 2 loss to Tulsa Roughnecks FC earlier on Saturday.
The Aztex opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a counterattack following an S2 corner. Romain Gall carried the ball down the left side of the pitch before crossing it into Andres Cuero who was one-on-one with S2 goalkeeper Charlie Lyon. Cuero tapped in his shot to make it 1-0 for the home side.
Austin doubled its lead nearly 20 minutes later when Cuero returned the favor for Gall, assisting the Columbus Crew loanee for the second Aztex goal of the evening.
Before the break, Garza pulled one back for the Rave Green after finding himself on the end of a Andrés Correa thru-ball from midfield. The Texan dribbled around the Aztex goalkeeper and slotted his shot into the net from a tight angle to make it 2-1.
S2 now returns home to face Orange County Blues FC on Friday, September 11 at Starfire Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / SoundersFC.com).
