Sound Welcome Sports Illustrated

November 30, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release

Patchogue, NY-A battle of the ABA's frontrunners will occur this weekend at Suffolk Community College in Selden. The Strong Island Sound will take a 5-3 record into the set and host the 5-1 Vermont Frost Heaves on Friday, December 1st at 7:30 p.m. and the 3-3 Cape Cod Frenzy on Saturday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

The expansion Frost Heaves come into the contest with a 5-1 record and are on a five-game win streak. The team is owned by Sports Illustrated writer Alexander Wolff, who has chronicled the team from its inception in the magazine and SI website ("Alex in Wonderland"). To have the ABA brought to life in the most reputable sports publication in the world has been a big boost for the league. And it doesn't hurt that the Vermont franchise has been one of the strongest in the early going, either.

The Frost Heaves have won five consecutive games since losing on opening night in Quebec City. This past weekend, they defeated the Frenzy at Cape Cod by 17 and 35 points. Their head coach is Will Voight, and the roster includes PG Tyrone Barley (who participated in both the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic rookie camps), SG Kevin Harrington (the cousin of former NBA star Jamal Mashburn), swingman Tyrone Levett (a four-year standout for the Alabama State Lakers), swingman Antonio Burks (who scored a game high 30 points in the 129-94 win over Cape Cod on Sunday), and 6'11" center Johann Collins. The Frost Heaves have moved into first place in the Blue North Division, ahead of the Rochester Razorsharks, the defending ABA champions.

The Sound defeated the Cape Cod Frenzy at Suffolk Community College 116-97 on November 18th. Tommie 'Gunzz' Eddie was the game high scorer with 35 points. The Frenzy were led by Rob Sanders with 19 points. The star forward was injured during Saturday's game against Vermont and is scheduled to return in time for the game in Long Island. Other players to watch will be PG Steve Hailey, who dished out 12 assists and had four steals in the earlier contest against the Sound, and F Richard Pittman, who has been one of Cape Cod's 'go-to' players all season.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
