Bridgeport Islanders News Release
ALLENTOWN, Penn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2-1-0-0), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, scored three times in the second period and twice in the third to storm past the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (1-1-0-0) at PPL Center on Friday. Carter Verhaeghe (1g, 1a) and Bracken Kearns (2a) each recorded two points as the Sound Tigers won their first road game of the season.
Among the highlights, Michael Dal Colle notched his first professional goal and Christopher Gibson (2-0-0-0) stopped 18 of 20 shots in the victory.
Both offenses were timid in the first 20 minutes, recording just 13 shots between the two clubs. The Phantoms notched just one shot through the first 16 minutes and finished the frame with seven chances, despite a pair of power-play opportunities.
The middle frame was a different story as both teams combined for four goals on 17 shots including three for the Sound Tigers who built a 3-1 advantage. Josh Winquist opened the scoring just 47 seconds in with his first tally of the season. From the left circle, Kearns gained control of the puck and funneled a crisp feed to the right post where Winquist redirected it home.
The Jones' twins teamed up at the 14:31 mark to double Bridgeport's lead with a shorthanded tally. With Scott Mayfield in the box for holding, Kellen Jones grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and raced into the Phantoms' end for a 2-on-0 breakaway. From the left wing, he slid the puck across to Connor Jones who slammed it in for his first goal of the season in his 100th professional game.
Lehigh Valley answered just over a minute later when former Sound Tigers forward Colin McDonald cleaned up Jordan Weal's rebound from the doorstep with a forehand shot past the left leg pad of Gibson. It was McDonald's first goal of the season, a power-play tally, at 15:37 of the second.
Dal Colle regained Bridgeport's two-goal advantage with his first professional goal with just 1.5 seconds remaining in the middle frame. With time winding down, Josh Ho-Sang retrieved a stranded puck in the neutral zone, turned on the jets and created a 2-on-1 rush down the right wing. From the circle, he slowed and placed a brilliant saucer pass on the tape of Dal Colle's stick where he finished past the;
