Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 5-2 to the Hershey Bears at home Wednesday night marking the end of a pair of winning streaks at three games overall and six at home.
The Sound Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 first-period lead when Cole Jarrett scored his first goal of the season at the 8:13 mark. Brendan Yarema was awarded with the lone assist on what was the Sound Tigers' third shorthanded goal in as many games.
Hershey's Marek Svatos scored his tenth goal of the season off assists from Jamie Rivers and Johnny Boychuk to tie the game at 1-1 at 18:38.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead 2:38 into the middle frame when Jeff Ulmer intercepted the puck at his own blue and raced the length of the ice to score his 15th goal of the season, unassisted and shorthanded.
Svatos whipped a shot off the glove of Sound Tigers goaltender Dieter Kochan for his second goal of the game and eleventh of the season off assists from Martin Hlinka and David Masse to make it 3-1 5:19 into the third period. Hershey upped the lead to 4-1 4:49 later when Brett Clark scored a power-play goal, his fifth marker of the season, off assists from Svatos and Masse.
The Sound Tigers cut the lead to 4-2 at 15:19 with a power-play goal from Matt Koalska, his second goal of the season, off an assist from Rob Collins. Koalska scored in his first game back after missing four in a row with a knee injury while Collins extended a pair of streaks to five straight games with an assist and seven straight with a point.
Svatos completed a hat trick with his third goal of the game, and 12th of the season, by out-muscling Collins for an empty-net goal to make it 5-2 with 1:24 left to play. Ulmer picked up the only assist on the final tally.
Svatos was the first star of the game, Ulmer was the second and Jarrett was the third.
Bears goalie Peter Budaj made 26 saves while Kochan, the AHL Player of the Week, made 34 as Hershey had a 39-28 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 6 on the power play, and the Bears were 1 for 5.
The Sound Tigers will visit the Hartford Wolf Pack this Friday at 7:05 p.m. and the Albany River Rats this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. before returning home to host the Portland Pirates this Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
