Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs scored two short-handed goals from Chris Higgins and Tomas Plekanec in a 4-3 win over the St. John's Maple Leafs on Wednesday night at Copps Coliseum.
With the win, the Bulldogs record improves to 23-22-6-5. Hamilton is now above .500 for the first time since Nov. 16th when they held a record of 6-5-3-1.
St. John's opened the scoring at 3:40 of the first period when Ben Ondrus tallied his sixth goal of the season. Jeremy Williams and Clarke Wilm picked up assists on the goal.
Hamilton took a 2-1 lead near the end of the first period with two special teams goals in 2:39. The Bulldogs evened the score at the 15:14 mark on the power play when Trevor Daley let a shot go from the point that beat Leafs goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin through the five-hole. Then at 17:55 with the Bulldogs short-handed, Chris Higgins stole the puck, went in on a breakaway and made no mistake with a nifty backhand goal. The goal marked the 100th short-handed goal in Bulldogs franchise history.
The teams traded goals early in the second period just 2:04 apart. The Bulldogs posted their second short-handed goal of the game at the 1:03 mark when Tomas Plekanec scored on a breakaway from Chris Higgins. The Maple Leafs responded at 3:07, courtesy of a Jeremy Williams goal that made the score 3-2.
Hamilton restored their two-goal lead at 6:09 of the second period, exactly one second after St. John's killed off a penalty. The goal was scored by Duncan Milroy and was assisted by Corey Locke and Andrei Kostitsyn.
The Maple Leafs would tally an early goal in the third period when Brendan Bell made the score 4-3 with his fourth goal of the season. St. John's would not draw any closer, as the final score was 4-3 in favour of the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Bulldogs netminder Yann Danis was solid in net making 33 saves on 36 shots while Leafs goaltender Aubin stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, February 25th, when the Rochester Americans visit Copps Coliseum. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available for purchase for both games at the Copps Coliseum Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling Ticketmaster at (905) 527-7666.
Bulldogs fans can listen to Derek Wills call all the action on 820 CHAM "THE LEGEND" in Hamilton, Team 990 in Montreal, or on the Internet via www.hamiltonbulldogs.com.
