BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, tied the Albany River Rats 1-1 at home Saturday in the final game for both teams prior to the All-Star break. It was the third tie, the second by the score of 1-1, in five meetings of the teams this season.
Albany took a 1-0 lead on Tuomas Pihlman's sixth goal of the season, a power-play tally, 6:31 into the game off assists from Steve Kariya and Greg Crozier. The lead held up through both the first and second periods.
Sound Tigers Defenseman Tomi Pettinen tied the score at 1-1 with 10:12 left in regulation. Justin Mapletoft and Cole Jarrett assisted on the equalizer, which was Pettinen's first goal of the year and just his second in two seasons as a Sound Tiger. Mapletoft also extended a scoring streak to four games on the play.
Pettinen was the first star of the game, Mapletoft was the second, and River Rats Goaltender Ari Ahonen was the third with a 21-save effort. Sound Tigers Netminder Dieter Kochan also turned in a strong performance with 18 saves as the Sound Tigers outshot Albany 22-19. Kochan is now unbeaten in his last three games at 2-0-1. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 5 on the power play while the River Rats were 1 for 3.
The game also featured a highlight in the stands as 17-year-old Lauren Mecozzi won a replica of the jersey worn by the 1980 United States Olympic hockey that was signed by some of the players from the gold-medal winning team and actors from the Disney movie "Miracle", which profiles the legendary squad.
