Strong Island Sound News Release

Patchogue, NY- The 2007-08 ABA season will get under way this week and the Strong Island Sound will open on the road at Westchester on Sunday, November 4. The Phantoms, head coached by former WNBA star Teresa Weatherspoon, will host their first game since the franchise moved from Brooklyn at the conclusion of last season.

Dytanya Mixson, the head coach of the Sound, is entering his third year with the team and second as the top man on the bench. He is looking to improve on last season's second-place finish in the Blue Central Division.

Weatherspoon, 41, was a standout player for the New York Liberty for seven seasons and brings a recognizable name and instant credibility to the Westchester franchise, which moved from Brooklyn in the offseason. The former Comets are owned by Daisy Brand and Artie McGriff, the mother and brother of the Los Angeles Clippers' Elton Brand.

The Sound will have a mix of returning veterans and younger newcomers. Coming back from last season are Raphael Edwards, Chris Grant, Raheim Lowery, Shawn Simpson, Caheem Broadus and Sean Dantzler. Charles Jones and Donald Harrison played briefly on Long Island during the 2005-06 season for the Sound in their first season in the ABA.

Sunday's tip-off will be at 1:15 p.m. at Peekskill High School. The Sound will then travel to Delaware on Friday, November 9 when they take on the expansion First State Fusion at Delaware State University at 7:45 p.m.

The Sound's home opener is on Sunday, November 11 at 4:15 p.m. at Suffolk Community College in Selden when they face the Fusion to complete the home-at-home two-game set. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children, seniors and students, and are available at the door or by visiting www.strongislandsound.com.
