Macon Mayhem News Release

The Macon Mayhem have signed a familiar name to their training camp roster, securing winger Stathis Soumelidis to a tryout for the 2019-20 season.

Of all the player signings Head Coach Leo Thomas has made this off-season, Stathis Soumelidis holds the greatest pedigree in the professional hockey landscape. At just 25, he already has four pro seasons under his belt and is the lone player from Macon's President's Cup Championship squad expected to return. The Czech power forward also logged 17 games in the ECHL last season between the Florida Everblades and Norfolk Admirals, tallying a goal and two assists.

"Soumie is one of our leaders and knows the kind of game we want to play here in Macon," Thomas said. "With us losing a few key players, I'm leaning on him to be one of the guys to step up and I know he's ready for it."

Soumelidis (6'2, 225) sported an "A" last season as one of the team's alternate captains and helped lead the Mayhem to their best start in franchise history, along with a fourth consecutive postseason appearance. In 2018-19, the Mayhem were 21-12-3 (.625%) with Soumelidis in the lineup. Without him, they were just 6-12-2 (.350%). His two-dimensional capabilities, scoring touch, and his aptitude for winning board battles have made him an indispensable component to the team's success in recent years.

"I am really happy I will be playing for Macon again this year," Soumelidis said. "There is no team in this league I would rather play for than the Macon Mayhem. It's absolutely crazy this is going to be my fourth year with the team. I've made a lot of friends here and it's basically home away from home for me. It feels like yesterday I was just a rookie when we won the championship here in Macon and it would be pretty amazing to do it again this year."

Soumelidis becomes the fourth player signing announced this off-season, joining a list with Jimmy Soper, Shawn Lynch and Kevin Entmaa. The signings will continue throughout the summer as training camp draws nearer. Opening night is scheduled for October 18th against the Fayetteville Marksmen. Mayhem season tickets and partial plans are available for the 2019-20 season. For more information, call the Mayhem front office at (478) 803-1592.
