SOTI Weekend Preview - Back from the Holidays

December 27, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Mississauga Steelheads have a busy week ahead as they return from their holiday break to face the North Bay Battalion, Sudbury Wolves, and Kingston Frontenacs.

Divisional Match Up

The Steelheads play a rare Wednesday home game on the 29th against division rival North Bay Battalion. In the last game before the holiday break, the teams faced off against each other in Mississauga on December 17. It was an intense goaltending duel, as Roman Basran and Joe Vrbetic - two of the league's top goalies - went head-to-head. Nevertheless, Basran came out on top, stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced.

Both teams are tied for first place in the division with 36 points each. However, the Steelheads (17-7-1-1) have played three fewer games than the Battalion (16-9-2-2). This game will determine who takes sole possession of first place in the Central Division.

Happy New Year!

The Steelheads head on the road to take on the Sudbury Wolves for the fourth time this season on New Year's Eve. Back in November, the Steelheads played three straight games against the Wolves, earning two wins. These games allowed the Steelheads to reach several milestones, including Luca DelBelBelluz's first career hat trick in a 7-2 win on November 21. The Steelheads also solidified the franchise record for longest point streak (11 games) with a 5-3 win over the Wolves on November 25.

Two of the Best

The Kingston Frontenacs return to Mississauga on January 2 as two of the best teams in the OHL continue in an intense season series. The last four games against the Frontenacs have been a nail-biter, with both teams showing off their offensive power. The series has seen unbelievable come-backs, several trips to OT, and a fantastic display of the best talents in the OHL.

The Frontenacs currently lead the league with 37 points in 25 games (17-5-3-0), but the Steelheads trail just behind. Both teams have also been listed in the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings several times this year. With Shane Wright, Leevi Meriläinen, and Martin Chromiak away at the World Juniors, the Steelheads have the opportunity to capitalize and tie the season series up at 3 wins each.
