Somerset Walks Off In Ninth
The Lancaster Barnstormers pushed the Somerset Patriots into the bottom of the ninth late Sunday but could not get them to the tenth.
Lancaster scored a tying run on an RBI single by Ryan Casteel in the top of the ninth, but the Patriots catcher, Yovan Gonzalez drove a two-out game winning single over the head of Grant Desme in right field in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 Somerset win and a sweep of a three-game weekend series.
Rico Noel bunted for a base hit off Chase Huchingson (3-0) to open the ninth. Trayvon Robinson followed with a walk, giving the Barnstormers a second runner. Lancaster attempted a double steal, but Gonzalez fired to second, cutting down Robinson for the first out. Casteel drilled a ball off Huchingson's body with the ball caroming into center as Noel scored the tying run. Grant Desme added a two-out single to left, but Huchingson retired Vladimir Frias on a grounder to first for the final out.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Endy Chavez lined a 1-2 pitch from Huascar Brazoban into center. Pinch runner Justin Pacchioli stole second, and the Barnstormers opted to walk Justin Trapp intentionally. Mike Fransoso lined to left for the second out. The throw back to the mound eluded Brazoban for an error with Pacchioli advancing to third. Gonzalez followed with his game winning hit.
Somerset grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Ramon Flores walked against Brooks Hall, stole second and rode home on Alfredo Rodriguez' double down the first base line. Gonzalez tacked on an RBI single in the fifth for a 2-0 edge.
Noel and Robinson combined to produce Lancaster's first run off Cory Riordan in the top of the seventh. The inning started when Noel banged a single into left. He stole second and scored when Robinson drove an opposite field double off the wall in left center.
Lancaster returns home to face the York Revolution in a quick four-game series beginning with a doubleheader Tuesday evening. The Barnstormers will send Jonathan Albaladejo (6-4) to the mound in the opener and lefty John Anderson (0-1) in the nightcap. York will counter with southpaw Jonathan Sanchez in game one. It is 7-1-7 Night. Fans may tune into BRC 11 beginning at 6:00.
NOTES: Noel handled 10 chances, including a dazzling play up the middle in the bottom of the seventh that prevented an insurance run from scoring...He also matched last year's total with his 36th stolen base...The run scored by Pacchioli was the first allowed by Lancaster's bullpen in 61 outs...Blake Gailen did not start for only the second time this season but pinch hit for Carlos Garcia in the eighth...He has played in all 69 games...Lancaster outhit Somerset, 17-15, in the series...Hall recorded his fourth quality start and the team's 22nd.
