Long Island Ducks News Release

(Atlantic City, N.J., June 23, 2005) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 11-4 (Box Score) in front of 6,263 fans at Citibank Park on Thursday evening. Scott Sobkowiak picked up his sixth win of the season after tossing five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking five and striking out five.

Somerset took an early lead, scoring six runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. Long Island cut the lead to five when Patrick Lennon scored on a dropped ball by leftfielder Pat Boran in the bottom of the frame. Henry Rodriguez shrunk the deficit to three with a two-run home run in the fifth that scored Justin Davies, but that was as close as the Ducks would come. The Patriots rounded out their scoring with a five-run eighth inning. Dominick Ambrosini scored in the bottom of the ninth on a double play groundout to score Long Island's final run. Somerset's Kevin Nicholson went 3-for-3 with a pair of homers and four runs batted in.

Tony Runion (1-4) was touched for the loss after tossing 1.1 innings and surrendering six runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two. Duck Tales... Prior to tonight's start, Somerset starter Scott Sobkowiak had given up just 10 walks on the season. Duck batters had half that many this evening alone... Three of the four Duck pitchers on the night had their longest outings of the season. Brian Dorsey pitched 4.0 innings (previous high- 3.0), Mike Crudale pitched 2.1 innings (previous high- 1.2), and John Rocker pitched 1.1 innings, his first outing longer than one inning... Henry Rodriguez now has eight hits in his nine games since joining the Ducks. Of the nine, just one has not gone for extra bases (eight hits, four doubles, three home runs, and one single)... Somerset's Kevin Nicholson put up two home runs on the night, one coming from each side of the plate... The streaks continued for Pete Rose, Jr. and Patrick Lennon. PJ has now reached base safely in his last 18 games at Citibank Park, the second longest active home games on base streak in the Atlantic League, while Lennon has hits in 12 straight games, third longest active streak in the Atlantic League... Tonight's crowd of 6,263, the sixteenth sellout of the season, raises the total to 2,348,984 fans who have enjoyed baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.

The Long Island Ducks, 2004 Atlantic League champions, play their home games at Citibank Park and are in their sixth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have filled their ballpark to over 100 percent capacity in each of their first five seasons and are one of the most successful minor league franchises in the country.
