Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ- The Five-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Josh Schmidt.
Schmidt has experience in the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins organizations, reaching Triple-A in three seasons.
Schmidt split the 2012 season at Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans for the Marlins. He was 5-3 with a 3.83 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched in 37 games played for Jacksonville. Schmidt was 0-0 with a 2.77 ERA in six games for New Orleans.
In 2011, he spent time at both Double-A and Triple-A for the Yankees, finishing with a combined 8-4 record, a 2.31 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched in 43 games. At the Double-A level, his ERA was 1.83 in 24 games.
Schmidt has three other seasons of Double-A time for the Yankees where his highest ERA in any of those seasons was 3.02.
"We like what Josh brings to our staff. He's a guy that doesn't give up a lot of runs and gives his team a great chance to win whenever he's out on the mound. Josh should do a great job of keeping the hitters off balance with his effectiveness of changing speeds and we feel he is a very nice addition to our team," said Brett Jodie, manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club.
Schmidt has a minor league career 41-23 record, a 2.65 ERA, and 557 strikeouts in 488.2 innings pitched in 323 appearances.
The 2013 season presented by Ford will begin at home on Thursday, April 18th at 7:05 pm. For more information about the upcoming season, call (908) 252-0700 or visit www.somersetpatriots.com .
