Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 8-1 in front of 6,193 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening to end a three game losing streak for Somerset.
The Patriots jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Left fielder Melvin Nieves and designated hitter drew back-to-back walks and first baseman Matt Dryer followed with a single to load the bases with no outs. Third baseman Jeff Nettles reached on a fielder's choice and error that allowed both Nieves and Blosser to score. Catcher Robinson Cancel drove in Dryer with an RBI single and shortstop Eric Martins drew a walk to once again load the bases. Right fielder Marcus Knight followed with an RBI single and Cancel came around to score on a fielder's choice. Center fielder Michael Warner followed with a triple to drive in two runs and scored on a ground out by Nieves.
Newark scored a run in the top of the fourth inning. First baseman Tom Hage doubled down the left field line and moved to third base on a ground out by right fielder Danny Clyburn. Hage came around to score on an error by Nettles that made the score 8-1.
Warner finished the game 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, a run scored, and two RBI. Patriots starter Jason Dickson (1-1) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on four hits and three strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Newark starter Chris Clark (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on two hits in over an inning pitched.
The Somerset Patriots 2003 Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 2:05 pm game on Sunday against future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson and the Newark Bears. Sunday's game also includes a special Mother's Day Celebration presented by Home Goods.
