(Bridgeport, Conn., May 10, 2003) â The Bridgeport Bluefish fell to the Camden Riversharks, 4-3, on Saturday evening before 2,223 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The loss marked the first time this season that the Bluefish have been shutout.
Camden jumped all over Bluefish starter Alex Lontayo (1-1), knocking the lefthander out of the game in the fourth inning after he surrendered five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 3.2 innings (4K). The Riversharks tagged Lontayo for two home runs and five doubles. The Riversharks seized a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Dwight Maness solo home run to left field. Camden followed with a three-run outburst in the second inning on a two-run home run from Brad Strauss, scoring Byron Gainey who doubled to lead off the inning. Travis Anderson continued the scoring for Camden later in that inning with a RBI-double, scoring David Miller who had reached base with a single. Camden tacked on another run in the fourth inning with a Kevin Jordan RBI-double.
Camden starter Kevin Dougherty tossed just his second complete game in his five-year career. He scattered five hits over nine innings while improving to 2-0 on the season. The Bluefish bullpen of Javier Martinez, Bobby Chouinard and T.J. Mathews combined to toss 4.1 scoreless innings of relief of Lontayo while allowing just two hits (1BB, 6K).
The Bluefish managed just five hits in the game. Angel Espada led the Bluefish with two hits. Jose Offerman, a two-time Major League All-Star and thirteen year veteran of Major League Baseball, went 0-for-2 with a walk in his Bluefish debut. He was retired on a groundout to the pitcher in the second inning, walked in the fifth inning and struck out looking in the eighth inning.
BRIDGEPORT BLUEFISH SIGN PITCHER BOBBY CHOUINARD
Bridgeport, Conn., May 10, 2003 -- The Bridgeport Bluefish announced that they have signed RHP Bobby Chouinard and have placed RHP Mark Brownson on the disabled list.
Chouinard spent the 2002 season with Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Colorado Springs where he went a combined 1-0 with one save and a 3.21 ERA in 14 relief appearances. The 31-year-old righthander has pitched in the Major Leagues with Oakland (1996), Milwaukee (1998), Arizona (1998-99) and Colorado (2000-01). Overall, during his five Major League he went 11-8 with one save and a 4.57 ERA in 111 games (13 starts). Chouinard has also boasted a 79-58 record in 173 career minor league games. He was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round of the June 1990 free-agent draft.
Brownson was placed on the disabled list after making one start on the road at the season-opening series at Newark. He suffered the loss in that start after surrendering seven run on ten hits in three innings. Brownson, 27, had two stints in the Major Leagues with the Colorado Rockies (1998-99).
