Somerset Patriots Crush Road Warriors in Home Opener

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors 10-1 in front of 6,343 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Tuesday evening for Somerset's 2003 Home Opener.

The Patriots put up five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 10-1 lead over Pennsylvania. Second baseman Emiliano Escandon led off with a double and advanced to second when center fielder Michael Warner drew a walk. A single by left fielder Melvin Nieves loaded the bases and first baseman Jeremy Luster drove in a run on a fielder's choice scoring Escandon. Third baseman Jeff Nettles followed with a three run double and would score on a passed ball.

The Road Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. First baseman Isaias Nunez doubled and came around to score on an RBI double by designated hitter Javier Sein.

The Patriots came back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Designated hitter Matt Dryer doubled and moved to second when shortstop Eric Martins was hit by a pitch. Right fielder Marcus Knight advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Escandon followed with an RBI single. Warner drove in a run with an infield ground out and Nieves drove in a run with an RBI single to make the score 3-1.

Somerset added two more runs in the sixth inning on two RBI doubles by Dryer and Martins. Dryer finished the game 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Escandon went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Nettles drove in three runs for Somerset.

Patriots starter Mike Oquist (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on eight hits in five innings pitched. Pennsylvania starter Byron Batson (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

The Somerset Patriots 2003 Season presented by Ford will continue at home against Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening for a 6:35 pm game.
