Bridgeport Bluefish Fall to Atlantic City Surf, 4-1

(Bridgeport, Conn., May 6, 2003) – The Bridgeport Bluefish fell to the Atlantic City Surf 4-1 before 3,545 fans on Tuesday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The loss marked the first time in team history that the Bluefish have dropped their home opener.

Atlantic City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Shane Monahan led off the inning with a single and moved all the way to third on a single by Brandon Jackson. Monahan then scored on a double steal and Raul Marvel drove in the second run of the inning with a RBI-triple. The Surf tacked on another run in the third inning on a RBI-single from Monahan, scoring Trey Beamon who led off the third inning with a double. Kim Batiste hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the eighth inning, to complete the scoring for the Surf. Monahan, Marvel and Beamon each had two hits for the Surf.

The Bluefish pushed their only run across in the ninth inning during a brief rally. Jose Amado scored the lone run for the Bluefish after leading off the ninth inning with a single. Ben Candelaria used a RBI-single to drive in Amado who was running on the pitch. Candelaria and Rodney Lindsey each collected two hits for the Bluefish.

Brady Raggio (0-1) took the loss for the Bluefish despite allowing just three runs on nine hits in seven innings (2BB, 5K). Javier Martinez made his debut for the Bluefish in relief of Raggio, going two innings while allowing one run (Batiste's solo home run). Dave Carroll (1-0) picked up the win for Atlantic City, going 8.1 innings while allowing just one run on seven hits (1BB, 1K). Randi Mallard earned his first save of the season for Atlantic City by recording the final two outs of the game.

With today's attendance of 3,545, the Bluefish have surpassed the 1.5 million fan mark.

The Bluefish will resume play on Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. for a special field trip day start. RHP Brad Cornett (0-0, 3.00) will take the mound for Bridgeport while opposing Atlantic City's RHP Anthony Chavez (0-1, 27.00).
