Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Somerset Patriots may as well have been playing football on Thursday night.

A sustained ground attack up the middle carried Somerset to a 5-4 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers in 11 innings at Clipper Magazine Stadium as the series stands even at one game apiece heading to TD Bank Park in Bridgewater, NJ for the remainder of the best-of-five set.

Ty Wright, who had four hits earlier in the game, drew a two-out, bases-empty walk in the top of the 11th inning after the Barnstormers had thrown out Aharon Eggleston on a steal attempt. Jake Fox nailed a double into right center which died on the vinyl signs, scoring Wright all the way from first with the decisive run off Jason Urquidez (0-1).

Lancaster got a leadoff single by Blake Gailen in the bottom of the inning, but Jon Hunton nailed the game down with the tying run at third. The Somerset closer saved hit 50th total game of 2014, his first in the playoffs.

The Barnstormers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first on a two-run single to right by Cole Garner and Wilson Batista's double to left which skipped beyond Luis Montanez's shoestring effort.

Somerset's attack began in the sixth inning. Jonny Tucker led off with a double to left and scored on Wright's ground single up the middle. Starter Dan Osterbrock cut the Patriots off at that point, and Greg Golson made it 4-1, Lancaster, with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth, the Barnstormers' only hit in the second thru ninth inning of the game.

After Daryle Ward opened the seventh with a single into left center, Butch Hobson went to his pen. Adam Donachie greeted Pete Andrelczyk with his second single over second base of the evening. Jeff Dominguez advanced the runners with a bunt, and Andrelczyk walked Eggleston as a pinch hitter to load the bases. Tucker hit a soft one-hopper to shortstop Lance Zawadzki, but Eggleston forced second baseman Olmo Rosario to make a weaker throw to first, disrupting the double play and keeping the inning alive. Wright followed with another roller into center to trim the lead to 4-3 before Cody Eppley picked up the final out.

Luis Montanez and Ward both singled to center with one out in the eighth. Eppley retired Donachie on a fly ball. Hobson turned Dominguez to the right side with Ross Peeples, but the Somerset shortstop rolled the sixth Patriots single of the night over second base to tie the game.

Matt Zielinski stranded runners at the corners in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.

Shunsuke Watanabe (8-2) will match up against Josh Lowey (3-0) at TD Bank Park for Game Three on Friday evening. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: The Barnstormers, who hit .320 in 20 regular season games in September, are batting .169 (11-65) in the series...Gailen leads the Barnstormers by reaching base five times in the two games...Rosario has three hits...Wright is 6-for-9 for Somerset...Lancaster is 13-7 all-time in post-season games.
