Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (24-28), thanks to a go-ahead eighth-inning home run by Nick Solak, edged the Jackson Generals (29-22), 5-4, on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. As Solak delivered at the plate, Montgomery starting pitcher and Tampa Bay Rays number 22 prospect Genesis Cabrera set a new season-high with nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
Jackson started the game off with a bang. Jamie Westbrook hit his second home run of the series and ninth of the season on a two-out offering from Cabrera, advancing the Generals in front 1-0.
The Biscuits responded, though. Jackson starter Bo Takahashi endured control issues early. The right-hander, pitching in his Double-A debut, hit Ryan Boldt with a pitch before walking Dalton Kelly to begin the bottom of the first. Despite Takahashi striking out the next two batters, Brett Sullivan tied the game on an RBI-single.
After the opening frame, Cabrera and Takahashi settled in and battled in a pitchers' duel. Both kept the basepaths clean, allowing just two runners combined in the following three innings. However, Thomas Milone broke the 1-1 tie with his first Double-A home run in the fifth.
Catcher David Rodriguez added to the Biscuits' lead with a 2-RBI single in the sixth, putting Montgomery ahead 4-1.
As Cabrera returned to the mound in the seventh, Rudy Flores met the southpaw with a solo home run, doubling the Generals' run total. Following a walk to Josh Prince and Marcus Littlewood lining out, Cabrera was relieved by Jordan Harrison.
Jackson was able to cut the deficit to one against Harrison, scoring on a fielding error by Biscuits' shortstop Jermaine Palacios.
In the eighth, three bases on balls, including a bases-loaded walk, allowed the Generals to knot the score at 4-4. Jose Vinicio had an opportunity to give Jackson the lead but flew out with the bases loaded.
Nick Solak made up for his team's squandered advantage, propelling the Biscuits in front, 5-4, with his seventh home run of the season, coming off Generals' reliever Yoan Lopez (1-3).
In his second inning of work, Montgomery's Ruben Alaniz (2-1) retired Westbrook with two outs and a runner on, evening the series at one game apiece.
Montgomery will continue a five-game set against Jackson as the Biscuits celebrate Country Music Night, featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by WLWI, on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. The Biscuits will start Sam McWilliams (0-1), who is making his first start at Riverwalk Stadium, as Taylor Widener (3-2) takes the ball for the Generals.
The five-game homestand also includes Gump in the Gump featuring a Greenbow Biscuits Jersey Auction and MAX Fireworks on Friday, June 1, as well as Flight Night, which includes a C-130 Figurine Giveaway presented by AUM and MAX Fireworks, on Saturday, June 2.
