May 30, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
BILOXI, MS - Alex Jackson and Alay Lago hit home runs on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough as the M-Braves (24-28) saw their season high four-game winning streak snapped in a 6-3 loss at Biloxi.
M-Braves starter Touki Toussaint (L, 2-5) entered Wednesday's start in second place in the Southern League in strikeouts and he ended the night in first place and also tied for fourth in Minor League Baseball. The 21-year-old prospect struck out six Shuckers over 5.0 innings to give him 72 over 55.1 innings pitched this season. He yielded four runs on six hits in the loss.
The Shuckers (31-21) started the scoring in the bottom of the first against Toussaint when Corey Ray scored on a Jake Gatewood single.
The lead didn't last long as the Braves answered right back in the top of the second inning. Tyler Marlette drew a one-out walk and then Jackson launched his second home run of the year to left putting the M-Braves up 2-1. The homer was Jackson's first since April 9.
Lago hadn't homered in his first 177 at-bats this season, but that changed with a two-out solo shot to left in the third inning, that increased the Braves lead to 3-1.
The Shuckers sparked their comeback in the fourth inning and tied the game at 3-3 on a solo homer from Lucas Erceg and an RBI single from Ray. Biloxi went ahead for the first time since the first inning on a fifth-inning solo shot by Gatewood, his 10th of the year tying him for the league-lead.
Ray stretched Biloxi's lead in the sixth inning to 6-3 on a two-run home run to right-center off M-Braves reliever Sean McLaughlin who was making his Double-A debut.
Biloxi starter Cody Ponce (W, 2-3) earned the win after 6.0 innings on the mound and reliever Luis Ortiz (S, 1) pitched the final 3.0 innings for the save.
Marlette walked twice on Wednesday to extend his on-base streak to 13 but went 0-for-2 at the plate seeing his 12-game hitting streak come to an end.
The M-Braves and Shuckers will play game three of the five-game series on Thursday night at MGM Park. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm with RHP Bryse Wilson (1-0, 3.74) getting the start for the Braves and RHP Zack Brown (3-0, 3.09) starting for Biloxi. The game can be heard on 103.9 WYAB and the free TuneIn Radio app.
The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park for a ten-game homestand beginning on Sunday, June 3 through Tuesday, June 12. For tickets or more information visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
