Sod Poodles Late Inning Rally Not Enough to Overcome Midland's Explosive Offense

April 11, 2019 - Texas League (TL1)
Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release

AMARILLO, Texas - The Amarillo Sod Poodles dropped their second straight series, falling to the Midland RockHounds by a final score of 11-5. The Sod Poodles put together a late rally in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the high powered Midland offense.

In the top of the third, the RockHounds struck first when they plated five runs on only two hits against Amarillo starter Adrian Morejon. Brallan Perez got the scoring started when he drove in Luke Persico on an RBI single to right field. Dairon Blanco would then open up the ballgame with a grand slam to center field to give the RockHounds the 5-0 advantage.

Midland starting pitcher Brian Howard kept Amarillo bats quiet in Wednesday night's game as he went five innings and only allowed four hits, one of which was a leadoff single by Sod Poodle left fielder Jorge Ona.

In the top of the eighth inning, Midland tacked on two more runs when Kevin Merrell hit a sharp line drive to center field scoring Blanco and Collin Theroux to extend the RockHounds lead to 7-0. The Sod Poodles would answer back in the bottom of the inning when Buddy Reed hit his second home run of the season to right field to cut the Midland lead to 7-1, ending the shutout bid.

The RockHounds pushed four more runs across in the top of the ninth via an Edwin Diaz RBI double and a Theroux three-run home run to deep right field to extend the Midland lead to 11-1.

The Sod Poodles gave it one last push to make their comeback in the bottom of the ninth, putting up four runs sparked by a Peter Van Gansen two-RBI single to left field. Owen Miller then hit a two-run home run to right field to cut their deficit to 11-5, but the squad couldn't continue the trend. The Sod Poodles have now dropped two straight series to start their inaugural season.

On Thursday, the Sod Poodles will welcome the Corpus Christi Hooks to HODGETOWN for the first time this season for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. when right-hander Jesse Scholtens will face off against the Hook's southpaw Brett Adcock in game one of the first-ever weekend series at HODGETOWN.
