San Diego Sockers News Release
Sockers Finishing Strong
San Diego has trailed their opponent in the third quarter of each of their last three matches, but have been able to find the finishing kick when necessary. The Sockers stormed back from deficits of 4-3, 4-1 and 4-2 to post wins over Turlock, Tacoma and Sonora respectively.
Surging Slavisa
In his first season with the San Diego Sockers, midfielder/forward Slavisa Ubiparipovic has taken his game to another level. With three straight multi-point games, "Slav" has taken the Sockers' team lead in goals (8) and points (13). Ubiparipovic has notched five goals and an assist in his last two matches, giving his team the second half lead in both fixtures.
Farber Scoring Streak Continues
Veteran midfielder Brian Farber is off to a strong start in his fifteenth pro season of arena soccer, netting a goal in each of his first six matches. Farber used fourth quarter dramatics to keep his goals streak alive against Sonora, netting twice in the final five minutes. On the season, Farber has seven goals, an assist and four blocked shots in six games played.
Captain on Ice
Hampered by a series of lower body injuries, Kraig Chiles has been held scoreless in his last four appearances, the longest scoring drought of his career. A hip injury forced Chiles out of action after taking two early shifts in the Sockers' 8-7 win over Sonora on Sunday. On the season, Chiles has recorded three goals and two assists in six matches played.
Scoring Out of the Back
Defenders Cesar Cerda and Luis "Peewee" Ortega are finding room to work in the offensive zone, ranking third and fifth on the Sockers in scoring. Cerda leads the Sockers with seven assists, and is third on the club with nine points. Ortega has eight points (four goals, four assists), while leading the club with twelve blocked shots. Peewee ranks second in the MASL in blocks.
Around the Western Conference
The Monterrey Flash (6-0), Sockers (6-1), Mesquite Outlaws (2-2) and Cal Express (3-3) currently sit in playoff position in the MASL Western Conference. Tacoma and Dallas sit at the bottom of the Western Conference table with records of 2-5 and 1-6 respectively. Ontario's Franck Tayou leads the MASL with 15 goals, and Tacoma Stars forward/head coach Nick Perera leads the MASL with 17 points.
