November 22, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers added to their veteran depth and leadership today when they announced the signing of veteran defender Antonio Sutton to a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed as per club policy.
Sutton, 39, is making his third tour of duty with the Sockers, playing parts of each of the last two seasons in San Diego. Called upon for big game experience and when a steady veteran hand is needed on the back line, Sutton was selected for six regular season games in 2012-13, scoring his first two goals in a Sockers uniform. Antonio was in the starting lineup for two playoff games as well, including the Ron Newman Cup championship, contributing an assist and tenacious defense to last year's playoff run.
Antonio joined the Sockers in mid-January of the 2011-12 campaign after playing the previous three years with the PASL California Cougars, where he was a member of their 2008-09 league championship team and the Cougars' player-coach from 2009 to 2011.
"We are very happy to once again have Antonio as part of the Sockers organization," said general manager John Kentera, "He's a class act all the way. 'Sutt' brings a tremendous amount of leadership and experience on and off the field. He fits in well with what we're trying to get done."
A tenacious and physical defender known for his long, flying dreadlocks, Sutton earned second-team all-PASL honors in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Overall in 37 PASL regular season games Sutton has recorded 24 goals and 10 assists (34 points).
A native of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Sutton graduated from North Carolina State and moved into a long and successful career in the sport of indoor soccer. Beginning with the Sacramento Knights of the CISL in 1997, Sutton helped the Knights win the league championship in 1999 before moving on to play in Philadelphia, Monterrey, Dallas and Cleveland. Antonio returned to California with the MISL California Cougars in 1995 and keeps his home in the Central California area to this day.
