October 8, 2010 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers have come to terms with veteran midfielder Paul Wright on a one-year contract for the 2010-2011 PASL-Pro championship season. Terms were not announced.
"We are delighted to be able to bring back Paul Wright for another championship run in San Diego," said Sockers' general manager John Kentera, "Wright has been known as the fastest man in indoor soccer since I saw him back in the glory days of the original team, and even now he remains one of the top midfielders in the country. We are a better team with 'P3' back in the fold and at the top of our power play."
Wright, 41, begins his 22nd campaign in major professional soccer. Last season, Paul helped the Sockers to the PASL-Pro North American championship, scoring a goal and four assists in San Diego's 9-8 championship victory over Guadalajara.
The "master of the free kick", Wright scored 14 goals with 23 assists in 15 PASL-Pro games last season. His 37 points ranked 7th in the league and he was 3rd in the league in assists. As the captain of the Sockers' power play, Wright helped San Diego to a league-leading 24 power play goals in 44 opportunities (54.5%).
"We believe Wright will continue to mesh perfectly with our younger players, providing not only great skill but also great leadership and experience," said Kentera.
This is Wright's third tour of duty with the Sockers. He began his professional indoor career with the Cleveland Crunch of the MISL in 1989, then was traded to the Sockers in 1990, where he helped San Diego to the MISL championship. Wright scored 101 goals in 100 games with the Sockers from 1990-92, when the MISL folded.
Continuing his career in the NPSL and APSL, Wright was later selected in the 1996 MLS supplemental draft and played three seasons with the MLS Kansas City Wizards. Wright later returned to the San Diego Sockers from 2002-2005, scoring 33 goals in 59 games.
Born in England, Wright has lived in San Diego since coming to the United States as a child. A graduate of Grossmont High, he played with the famous La Jolla Nomads soccer club before beginning his professional career. Still living in San Diego, Wright is the founder and operator of Speed To Burn, providing speed training for enhanced athletic performance.
The Sockers begin their 2010-2011 PASL-Pro schedule on October 14th in Stockton. Their home opener against the Tacoma Stars will be on November 20th at the Del Mar Arena, with kickoff set for 6:15pm. Season tickets are available by calling (866) 799-GOAL or visiting www.sdsockers.com.
