
Sockers lose 4-3 to Steamers

The Sockers' three-game home win streak ended Sunday evening with a 4-3 loss to the visiting St. Louis Steamers. After trailing 2-0 early in the game, the Steamers fought back with four unanswered goals to take the lead for good. The loss dropped San Diego's home record to 10-6 and overall record to 12-18, second in the Western Division.
San Diego got off to a quick start with Ato Leone scoring 1:03 into the contest. Defender Matt Johnson followed with his second goal of the season after being fed by Robbie Aristodemo at 7:11 of the first quarter. The Steamers' Fernando Errecalde cut the deficit to 2-1 by scoring his first of two goals off an assist by Steve Butcher at 9:54.
After the halftime break Errecalde put in the equalizer at 1:08 of the third quarter. Jake Bleyenberg continued the Steamers' run with a goal coming off an assist from Butcher at 2:21.
St. Louis increased their lead to 4-2 when Daryl Doran found Sterling Wescott for a goal at 5:01 of the fourth. The Sockers tried to rally back with a sixth attacker goal from Ato Leone at 11:25, but it was not enough. Despite having several scoring opportunities, the Sockers were unable to get one past Steamers goalkeeper Brett Phillips.
Victor Nogueira saved 14 of 18 shots faced and his season record dropped to 12-16. Steamers' goalkeeper Brett Phillips saved 18 of the 21 shots he faced.
San Diego will play their final two games against the Fury on back-to-back nights in Monterrey beginning on Wednesday, March 17 at 6:35 PST. The Sockers return home on Saturday, March 20 to take on the Baltimore Blast at 7 p.m. The last time the teams met in San Diego, the Sockers took the Valentine's Day match 5-3. The first 2,500 fans to the game receive free Sockers floppy hats. The first 4,000 adults get a free Kohl's gift card.
