St. Louis Steamers News Release
(St. Louis, March 14, 2004) -- Midfielder Fernando "Tati" Errecalde â signed just three days ago by St. Louis â scored two goals as the Steamers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat San Diego 4-3 Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena. With the victory, St. Louis (11-17) is now tied with San Diego (12-18) in the race for the sixth and final MISL playoff berth.
San Diego's Ato Leone scored just one minute, three seconds into the first quarter and teammate Matt Johnson tallied at 7:11 of the first to give the Sockers an early 2-0 lead. However, Errecalde scored at 9:54 of the first on an assist by Steve Butcher. Errecalde then tied the game 2-2 at 1:08 of the third on a feed from Sipho Sibiya. Jake Bleyenberg gave St. Louis a 3-2 lead at 2:21 of the third, and Sterling Wescott made it 4-2 with the eventual game-winner at 5:01 of the fourth. Leone scored a sixth-attacker goal at 11:25 of the fourth, but the Steamers held on for the 4-3 final in one of the team's biggest triumphs of the season.
Errecalde signed with the Steamers on March 11, the official "roster freeze" day in the MISL. A 5-foot-6, 135-pound midfielder, Errecalde contributed 21 points in just 16 games for the Steamers during the 2001 World Indoor Soccer League (WISL) season. The native of Tandil, Argentina had been coaching youth soccer in the Detroit area when he got the call from the Steamers.
Sunday's victory keeps the Steamers firmly in the MISL playoff mix. The teams with the six best records in the MISL qualify for the playoffs. St. Louis and San Diego are now tied for sixth. The Steamers have eight more games this season, including three this coming week: March 17 at 7:35 p.m. against the Dallas Sidekicks at The Family Arena; March 19 at 7:35 p.m. against the Kansas City Comets at The Family Arena; and March 20 at 6:05 p.m. (CST) against the Philadelphia KiXX at the Wachovia Spectrum.
In the March 17 St. Patrick's Day game, Steamers players will wear special green jerseys and a raffle will be held during the match for a chance to win autographed game-worn jerseys. March 19 is SCCYSA (St. Charles County Youth Soccer Association) Night with the Steamers. All SCCYSA players, coaches, and their families have the opportunity to purchase a ticket for the game and receive a second ticket of the same value free. Also, at halftime, 10 SCCYSA teams will be recognized on the field.
