San Diego Sockers News Release
Dallas, Texas â The San Diego Sockers earned their first road victory of the season 6-4 over the Dallas Sidekicks with three goals from Mariano Bollella and 16 saves from goalkeeper Victor Nogueira at Reunion Arena.
After a scoreless first half of play, Sockers midfielder Kevin Legg put San Diego on the board with his first goal of the 2003 MISL season at 3:35(1-0) of the third quarter. Dallas responded :37(1-1) seconds later when Sidekick defender Leo Pernia found the back of the San Diego net on a Dallas free-kick.
San Diego's leading scorer for the season, Mark Ughy hit his tenth goal of the year at 9:17(2-1) of the third period. Ughy's goal came on a power play, and a great feed from forward, Nino DaSilva. Next it was time for Socker's captain Mariano Bollella to get in on the act, with the first of his three goals on the night 9:48(3-1) into the third period. Again the Sidekicks had an answer, this time it was Patrick Shamu at 12:32(3-2). DaSilva concluded the third period scoring with his second goal of the season at 13:30(4-2).
Bollella took over early in the final stanza, beginning with a back-post volley at 2:25(5-2) on an assist from Robbie Aristodemo. Following a two-minute penalty on Shamu of Dallas for taking down Sockers rookie Jacob Ward, Bollella stepped up and converted a shootout goal at 5:39(6-2) of the fourth.
Sidekicks forward Beau Brown added two scores (6-4) for Dallas in the final seven minutes of action, but San Diego withheld the pressure to secure the win.
Sockers return home Sunday for their first meeting of the year with the St. Louis Steamers at 5 PM at the San Diego Sports Arena. The game marks the first time the teams face each other since the Sockers World Indoor Soccer League semi-final victory over the Steamers in Dec. of 2001. The first 3,000 fans at the game will receive Sockers T-shirts courtesy of Daphne's Greek Café and The San Diego Hall of Champions.
