
Steamers Rally to Beat Monterrey, 4-3

(St. Louis, Dec. 13, 2003) The St. Louis Steamers rallied from a 3-0 first-quarter deficit to defeat Monterrey 4-3 Saturday at The Family Arena. The Steamers (3-7) scored four second-period goals and held on to break a six-game losing streak in front of 2,352 fans on a snowy Saturday afternoon.
Steve Butcher scored two unassisted goals to lead the St. Louis offensive attack. Butcher now has a team-leading 12 goals this season, which places him in a tie for second among MISL goal-scorers. Steamers player/coach Daryl Doran also had two assists. St. Louis goalkeeper Brett Phillips made 14 saves to record the victory and improve his mark to 3-5 on the season. Monterrey (3-6) was led offensively by Armando Valdivia, who notched a goal and two assists.
St. Louis was whistled for 18 fouls compared to Monterrey's 13; the Steamers killed off four of five Fury power-play opportunities. The Fury outshot the Steamers 21-20 for the game.
Monterrey's Antonio Sutton put the Fury up 1-0 at 1 minute, 53 seconds of the first quarter on an assist from Valdivia. The Fury took a 2-0 lead at 12:18 on a goal by Marco Lopez. Less than a minute later, Monterrey took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Valdivia, with the assist to Brad Flanagan.
St. Louis got on the board at :44 of the second quarter on Butcher's first goal of the day. Steamers defender D.J. Newsom cut the deficit to 3-2 at 6:39 of the second on a rocket from the left side. Butcher tied the game 21 seconds later on a 150-foot, arcing shot from near the Steamers' yellow line. Aaron Susi scored the game-winner at 13:20 of the second on a feed from Doran. Neither team scored in the second half.
The Steamers travel to San Diego to take on the MISL Western Division Sockers in a Dec. 14, 7 p.m. CST kickoff at the San Diego Sports Arena. St. Louis' next home game is Dec. 27 against the Central Division-leading Milwaukee Wave at The Family Arena.
