Sockers Claim Two Player of the Week Honors
November 10, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
San Diego Sockers News Release
The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that San Diego Sockers goalkeeper Victor Nogueira and defender Sean Bowers have been named MISL Goalkeeper and Defender of the Week, respectively.
Nogueira snags the League's weekly goalkeeping honors thanks to two superlative performances last week. On Thursday, November 6, the 44-year-old saved 12 of 13 shots in a 3-1 Sockers win over Dallas. Nogueira shut out the Sidekicks for the first 56 minutes of the game before Patrick Shamu dented the twine at 11:20 of the fourth. And on Sunday, November 9, Nogueira held the Kansas City Comets (who entered the game with the MISL's best offense) to three goals, turning away 16 of 19 shots in a 6-3 victory.
For the season, Nogueira now ranks third in the League with a 4.13 goals against average and is second in minutes played (363), third in saves (72), and fifth in save percentage (.742). The native of Mozambique won his record ninth Goalkeeper of the Year Award in 2002-03, and earned four Defensive Player of the Week and three Defensive Player of the Month Awards a season ago. This is the 23rd weekly award earned by Nogueira in this League, second all-time.
Bowers joins teammate Victor Nogueira in earning weekly honors after scoring two goals and blocking four shots in two San Diego wins last week. The 35-year-old blocked three shots in the Sockers' 3-1 win over Dallas on November 6, and rejected one more shot in Sunday's 6-3 triumph over Kansas City. Bowers also scored two first-quarter goals against the Comets, helping the Sockers to a season-best offensive output. The native of San Diego has now scored four goals and five points while blocking seven shots in 2002-03.
Former Socker and current Baltimore Blast player, Carlos "Chile" Farias earned Offensive Player of the Week after totaling four assists in the Blast's 8-4 victory over the Monterrey Fury.
The Sockers travel to Baltimore on Friday, Nov. 21 and return home on Saturday, November 29, to face the Philadelphia KiXX at 7 p.m.
