Kansas City Comets News Release

San Diego, CA – The Kansas City Comets fought back from a 4-0 halftime deficit and pulled to within two goals early in the fourth quarter, but the San Diego Sockers rode a tight defensive effort to a 6-3 win over the Comets on Sunday night at San Diego Sports Arena. With their second straight loss, the Comets drop to 1-3 on the season. San Diego improves to 2-4 with their second win in a row.

The Sockers asserted themselves early, building a 4-0 first-quarter lead thanks to two goals apiece from Paul Wright (at 1:27 and 7:01, both restart goals) and Sean Bowers (at 4:56 and a restart goal at 11:14). San Diego had not scored more than three goals in any of their first five games this season.

San Diego took a 4-0 lead into the half after a scoreless second quarter. The defensive battle continued early in the third, until Dino Delevski got the Comets on the board at 11:33 to make it 4-1. At 13:14, the Sockers attempted to squash the K.C. rally with a goal from Mariano Bollella, but just 10 seconds later, Delevski answered back with a left-footed laser into the upper left corner of the net to make it 5-2. The Sockers took that edge into the third quarter.

Jamar Beasley continued Kansas City's comeback charge when he trickled home a goal just 41 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 5-3. Despite a series of offensive flurries as the clock continued to tick, the Comets could not solve Sockers goalkeeper Victor Nogueira, who finished with 16 saves. Kansas City inserted Wes Wade as the sixth attacker with roughly four minutes left, but San Diego's Mauricio Alegre promptly stroked a ball from midfield into the empty net to cap the win at 12:09.

DJ Horvath took the loss in goal for the Comets with 17 saves on 22 shots faced.
