Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers have now lost four straight games with a 8-6 defeat to the Edmonton Cracker-Cats at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers took the early 2-0 lead in the game but a costly error in the seventh inning plated two unearned runs which stood up as the eventual winnings runs. The Snakes second half record is now 10-9 and they are two and a half games back of the Cracker-Cats for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.

The Vipers scored the game's first runs in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff single from Drew Miller, walks to Kevin Price and Colin Moro, and a Darryl Brinkley run batted in sacrifice fly. Price made the score 2-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.

Edmonton tied the game in the next half inning as Jonathan Castro doubled, Marcus Nettles singled, and Castro scored when the relay throw for the outfield got away. Nettles followed by stealing third base and he scored on a wild pitch for the 2-2 score.

In the top of the fifth frame Chris Van Rossum singled, Castro doubled, and Jon Pasieka cashed a run with a sacrifice fly to hand the Cracker-Cats back the lead at 3-2.

Right back responded the Snakes in the bottom of the inning as Carlos Duncan tripled and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at three.

However in the top of the sixth Edmonton went up for good with three straight singles by Joe Jiannetti, Carlos Arroyo, and Orlando Miller for a run and the 4-3 advantage.

Four insurance runs were added in the top of the seventh inning as Pasieka singled, moved to second base on a Nettles sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Ruddy Yan base hit. Jose Morban followed with a RBI double and he later scored on a throwing error by second baseman Jorge Mejia after he had fielded an Arroyo ground ball. Arroyo made the score 8-3 when he stole second base and scored on a Miller RBI single.

Calgary closed to within two runs in the bottom of the inning as Duncan singled, Felix Jose walked, Nelson Castro doubled home a run, Miller singled in another, and Jorge Tang picked up a RBI fielder's choice for the 8-6 score.

Dallas Mahan (3-2) was saddled with the loss as he pitched six and a third innings and gave up 12 hits for four earned runs.
