Edmonton Capitals News Release
The visiting Edmonton Cracker-Cats finished off their three game series versus the Calgary Vipers this afternoon,
Nick Peterson started the game for the 'Cats. He had some trouble finding the strike zone, as he walked 5 batters while surrendering two earned runs. Dan Touchet came out of the bullpen midway through the second to relief Peterson. Touchet pitched very well, going 4.1 innings, striking out 3, only giving up 1 run. It increased the reliever's record to 2-3 on the season.
Dan Mahan got the start for the Vipers. He went 6.1 innings with 6 strikeouts, while giving up 6 earned runs.
The 'Cats defence was tested early, as they had to throw out two runners at home plate in the bottom of the first. On two separate plays, Darryl Brinkley and Jorge Mejia tried to give the Vipers their first lead of the series, only to have Edmonton's catcher, John Pasieka stand both of them up at home. Calgary received two runs in the bottom of the second, but Edmonton tied it up the following inning. Johnathan Castro and Marcus Nettles both singled and scored off of two Vipers errors to even the score at two.
The score stayed that way until the top of the fourth, when John Pasieka sent a sacrifice fly ball into centre field to score in Chris Van Rossum to giving the 'Cats a one run lead. With the score again tied, the Cats had four hits in the sixth, including a Orlando Miller single to cash in Joe Jiannetti, giving Edmonton the go-ahead run in the sixth. Jose Morban had a RBI double in the sixth and Orlando Miller's third hit of the game cashed in another runner, to give the Cats a five run cushion. In the bottom of the seventh, Kevin Altmen came into the game for the 'Cats to take over pitching duties from Brandon Camardese. Altman went 1.2 innings, only giving up 1 hit with a strikeout. Pete Sikaras came in to close the game for the 'Cats. It marked his 12th save of the season.
Calgary has now lost four in a row.
