Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - For the second straight night, solid pitching by both Orange County and Chico led to a low-scoring affair - the visiting Flyers needed two bases loaded walks, a balk and an RBI groundout to score all their runs, but it was enough to beat the Outlaws 4-2 Saturday at Nettleton Stadium...Orange County handing Chico their third consecutive loss.
The Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Outlaws starter Trevor Caughey surrendered a two out, bases loaded walk to Josh Arhart...then in the 4th Orange County went up 3-0 - a leadoff single by Fernando Pacheco and a double by Buddy Morales put runners at second and third with nobody out; two batters later Pacheco scored on Jeff Van Houten's groundout to short. With Gabe Mayorga at the plate, Caughey committed a balk, allowing Morales to come home from third.
Flyers starter Jesse Smith was perfect through four-and-two-thirds innings, retiring the first 14 Chico batters he faced...but with two outs in the 5th, Jose Valdez silenced any thought of a no-hitter with a clean single to center. Walks to Lino Garcia and Matt Ceriani loaded the bases...then Eric Pringle blooped a base hit down the left field line to plate Valdez and Garcia and make the score 3-2. It would turn out to be all the offense the Outlaws could muster - Smith held Chico to just three hits through the next three innings. Orange County plated an insurance run in the 9th without the benefit of a hit - Outlaws reliever Eric Sheridan walked two and hit a batter to load then bases...then Jeff LaRue was issued a free pass to force home Van Houten to make it 4-2. Dane De La Rosa came in to close things out for the Flyers in the bottom of the 9th - Chico did get the tying run to the plate, but pinch-hitter Shane Cronin bounced out to shortstop to end it and give Orange County its ninth win in ten meetings with the Outlaws this season.
Smith (4-1) struck out a season-high eight in eight innings of work to earn the victory, with De La Rosa picking up his 11th save of the season...Caughey (6-4) allowed just three runs in seven innings but was tagged with the loss. Jeremy Acey went 2-for-4 to pace the Flyers eight hit attack; the Outlaws had five hits, with no one enjoying a multi-hit game. Saturday's win drops Chico to 7-11 in the second half and 22-38 for the year...Orange County improves to 9-8 in the second half and 37-23 overall. The Outlaws look to salvage the finale of the weekend series Sunday with right-hander Berek Fasking (2-3) getting the start...the Flyers will counter with lefty Charles Merricks (5-2). Game time is 6:05pm... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
