
Snakes Swept for Fouth Straight Defeat

After giving up eight runs in the first three innings the Calgary Vipers were defeated 9-2 by the Victoria Seals in the back half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games before 2715 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After a run in the first inning and two in the second the Seals exploded for five tallies in the third to put the game to rest early. With the loss the Vipers have dropped four straight games and were swept by the Seals in the three-game series. Calgary's record falls to 20-12 in the Golden Baseball League season and they are now four games back, with 11 games left in the first half, of the North Division leading Chico Outlaws who play a double-header this evening.
Making his second start of the season Marcus McKenzie (0-1) took the loss by giving up seven runs in two innings pitched. Mark Michael was a lone bright spot on the day for the Vipers as out of the bullpen he threw three innings without giving up an earned run.
Victoria again scored in the top of the first inning as with two outs Terrence McClain doubled and scored on a Josh Arhart run batted in single for a 1-0 advantage.
The Seals added to the lead in the second when Kyle Orr was hit by a pitch, Wilver Perez walked, Dale Swinford singled to load the bases, McClain hit a sacrifice fly, and with runners at the corners Perez stole home when a pickoff throw went over to first base for a 3-0 score.
In the top of the third frame Victoria broke the game wide open with five runs for a 8-0 lead. Brian Rios singled, stole second base, Colin Moro singled in a run, Chris Van Rossum singled, Orr was again hit by a pitch to load the bases, the pitcher Anthony Pluta recorded an RBI when he reached on a throwing error by first baseman Brent Metheny which also scored a second run, Perez singled home a tally, and Arhart cashed one with a sacrifice fly.
Another run was added in the sixth inning by the Seals for a 9-0 advantage as Arhart doubled, Shane Cronin singled, and Moro drove in a run with a fielder's choice after he was robbed of a base hit by third baseman Caonabo Cosme.
Calgary snapped the shutout in the bottom of the frame as with two outs Kevin Price walked and Drew Miller drove in his team leading 33rd RBI with doubled for a 9-1 score.
The Vipers squeezed across another run in the seventh inning when Matt Edgecombe doubled and Jorge Mejia tripled for a RBI and a 9-2 final.
On Tuesday June 29th and Wednesday June 30th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers will host the Edmonton Capitals for a two-game series. It will be Toonie Tuesday on the 29th and after the game on the 30th the Vipers will host a Canada Day Fireworks Spectacular.
