Calgary Vipers News Release
For a second straight game the Calgary Vipers were defeated by a 3-2 score at the hands of the Victoria Seals in the first half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers fell behind early in the first inning and never could tie the game up including a play at the plate in the sixth inning that kept the Seals in the lead. With the loss the Snakes have dropped three straight contests and slide to 20-11 on the Golden Baseball League season and are now three and a half games back of the North Division leading Chico Outlaws who start a double-header later this evening.
Victoria jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Dale Swinford and Terrence McClain singled followed by a Brian Rios two-run double for a 2-0 advantage.
Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Jorge Mejia singled and scored on a Julio Ramirez run batted in double for a 2-1 score.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Vipers had a glorious chance to score when they put two runners in scoring position with one out but Kevin Price was picked off second base and they were unable to score to tie the game or even take the lead.
The Seals restored their two-run lead in the fifth as Wilver Perez singled, stole both second and third base, and scored on a McClain RBI double for a 3-1 lead.
The Vipers got within one run again in the sixth inning as Ramirez singled, Drew Miller doubled, and Kevin Price hit a sacrifice fly. With Miller at second base Caonabo Cosme singled to centerfield and Chris Van Rossum gunned a perfect throw to the plate for catcher Matt Kavanaugh who hung onto the ball and applied the tag despite being barrelled over by Miller.
Game two of this twin bill will start in 30 minutes.
