Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. - The Orange County Flyers used three homeruns, including a walk off in extra innings by rookie David Harris, to defeat the league-leading Chico Outlaws, 6-5, on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Flyers improved to 13-16 while Chico fell to 23-8.
Harris led off the eighth inning with the game-ending blast, overcoming an 0-for-3 start to the game with the biggest hit of the night. Doubleheaders in the GBL consist of two seven-inning games.
After Chico got on the board with two runs in the first inning, Jimmy Rohan evened the game with a two-run shot over the left field wall to tie the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the first.
The Outlaws broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth on J.J. Sherrill's league-leading 10th homerun of the year, a two-run shot to put Chico ahead, 5-4. Sergio Pedroza answered for Orange County in the home half of the fifth, crushing a solo shot to right field to pull Orange County within a run. A Steve Boggs RBI single tied the game, 5-5 in the sixth.
Bryan Harris (3-4) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in relief of Matt Durkin. Durkin finished the game tossing six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in a no decision.
Rusty Jones took the loss for Chico. Jones (0-1) retired the first four batters he faced, including a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning before giving up the game-winner to Harris to lead off the eighth.
The win is the second time this season a Flyers rookie has hit a walk-off homerun. Tyler Keeble defeated the Yuma Scorpions with a death blow on June 18 in a 5-4 win.
Orange County and Chico will play the second game of today's doubleheader beginning at approximately 8:15pm at Goodwin Field at Cal State Fullerton.
