Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers snapped a seven game losing streak against the Edmonton Cracker-Cats with a 5-4 victory at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. After giving up a late lead in the eighth Calgary bounced back in the ninth inning to retake the lead and then they held on in a tense bottom of the ninth for the win. With the victory the Snakes snap a mini two game losing streak and improve to 19-22 on the second half of the season and 45-40 overall.
The Cracker-Cats scored in the bottom of the first inning thanks to three straight two-out singles from Carlos Arroyo, Jose Morban, and Joe Jiannetti for the 1-0 advantage.
Patrick Arlis quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the next half inning with his seventh homerun of the season. Arlis was also excellent defensively for the Vipers as he threw out three base runners in the game.
Calgary took their first lead in the top of the third as Moro tripled and Carlos Duncan plated him with a single. Two more runs were scored for the 4-1 lead as Kit Pellow singled and was followed by run batted in base hits from Richard Austin and Travis Drader to cap the three run frame.
Edmonton got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Chris Van Rossum doubled and Jose Valdez singled him home for the 4-2 score.
In the bottom of the eighth inning Juan Infante led off with a single and with two outs Jiannetti hit a clutch two run homerun to tie the gave at 4-4.
Right back responded the Snakes in the top of the ninth as with two outs Pellow reached on a costly error by third baseman Morban. Austin followed with a base hit and Arlis came up with a big RBI single to take back the lead at 5-4.
Joe Sergent (4-3) picked up the victory for Calgary in throwing two and two third innings and striking out five while not walking one. Mac Suzuki (1) recorded his first save as with runners at the corners and nobody out in the ninth he was able to strike out two and get a groundball to end the game. Jeff Groeger got the start for the Vipers and was solid, pitching five and a third innings and giving up two runs. Dan Touchet (3-6) was saddled with a tough luck loss in giving up an unearned run.
