KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies defeated the Rocket City Trash Pandas on Wednesday night after getting a pair of runs in the eighth to take a late lead. Starter Cade Horton went five innings and did not surrender an earned run in the outing.
The Trash Pandas got on the board first in the first, as Sonny DiChiara hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Kyren Paris. They then extended the lead in the third thanks to an RBI single from Nolan Schanuel to score David Calabrese, making it 2-0 Rocket City.
Tennessee would capitalize on its first threat in their half of the third, as it loaded the bases with two outs. Then, Owen Caissie singled back up the middle to bring home both Jordan Nwogu and Andy Weber, tying the contest at two apiece.
The middle innings saw pitching take over, as Horton and Carlos Guzman for the Smokies and Robinson Pina and Jake Lee for the Trash Pandas combined to allow just two hits and no runs through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings combined.
Rocket City then retook the lead in the seventh, as a single from Calabrese singled home Bryce Teodosio, but Mac McCorskey was thrown out at home on the same play attempting to tack on an insurance run.
The Smokies tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, as Levi Jordan scored on a wild pitch from third. Another wild pitch in the frame would give Tennessee the lead, as Owen Caissie was plated thanks to a pitch getting away from Kelvin Caceres, giving the Smokies a 4-3 lead going into the ninth, a lead they would not relinquish.
The series continues tomorrow night (8/17) at 7:00 PM EDT for Thirsty Thursday presented by Coors Light. 20 oz beers will only be $3.
