Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- Christian Villanueva belted two home runs to lead the Tennessee Smokies to a 10-4 victory over the Mississippi Braves Monday at Trustmark Park. With the win, the Smokies took the series three-games-to-two. The M-Braves travel to Jackson, TN, for five games before returning to Trustmark Park Monday, April 20.
Mississippi (2-3) scored four runs on seven hits while Tennessee (3-2) plated 10 runs on 13 hits. The Smokies committed one error. Villanueva scored three times and drove in three runs. He also walked twice. Albert Almora and Dan Vogelbach also posted mult-hit games for Tennessee.
Almora led off the top of the first with a double to right field. Villanueva and Vogelbach drew walks before Bijan Rademacher laid down a perfect bunt, allowing Almora to score the game's first run.
The M-Braves responded in the bottom of the frame. Kevin Ahrens reached with a two-out single, and Seth Loman was hit by a pitch. David Rohm then delivered a single to center field, driving home Ahrens and tying the game at 1-1.
A six-run third inning gave Tennessee a comfortable 7-1 lead. A couple of walks followed by an Elliot Soto RBI-single started the inning. Ryan Dent walked and then Frank Batista singled to deep short, driving home Vogelbach to make it 3-1. Pin-Chieh Chen then delivered a bases-clearing triple to right field, extending Tennessee's lead to 6-1. Almora then drove home Chen with a base hit to center.
Villanueva blasted a solo home run in the sixth to make it an 8-1 game for the Smokies.
In the eighth, Kyle Schwarber walked and then Villanueva belted his second long ball of the day to extend Tennessee's lead to 10-1.
The Braves got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth. Rio Ruiz reached on a force out and Mallex Smith singled to start the frame. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Daniel Castro followed with a two-run double, making it a 10-3 game. Castro later scored on an error by the shortstop to add another run for the Braves, 10-4.
Batista (1-0) held the Braves to one earned run on just three hits. He struck out three in six innings pitched to pick up the win. Greg Ross (0-1) started and worked 2.2 innings for the M-Braves. He gave up seven earned runs on six hits and six walks while fanning two batters.
The M-Braves take a day off Tuesday before traveling to Jackson, TN, for a five-game series against the Generals. Right-hander Jason Hursh (0-1, 6.00) toes the rubber for the Braves. He'll counter Generals righty Stephen Landazuri (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
