Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - Tennessee (15-5, 50-40) split a doubleheader with Huntsville (10-8, 50-36) Friday night at Smokies Park. A crowd of 5,864 fans witnessed the Smokies win the first game of the doubleheader 3-1 but manage just one hit in the second game, a 2-0 loss.
A two out bases loaded single in the third inning by Bucky Jacobsen scored two as the Smokies jumped on Pedro Liriano (5-10) in the first game of the doubleheader. The Stars responded in the fourth when Noochie Varner drove home Brandon Gemoll with a double off Nick Stocks (7-4). A home run by Smokies center fielder Skip Schumaker made the score 3-1 after five innings. The solo shot was the second of the season for Schumaker.
The Smokies bullpen was perfect in relief as Jeremy Lambert and Mike Lyons worked the final two innings with Lyons registering his league leading 24th save. Stocks picked up his third win in a row after allowing one run over five innings.
The second game was scoreless into the sixth inning before Huntsville was able to score on a sacrifice fly by Richard Paz. Rhett Parrott (6-9) was charged with the run as he went 5 1/3 while allowing two hits and striking out two. Ryan Gripp added a solo home run in the seventh off newcomer Tyler Johnson to put the Stars ahead 2-0.
Former Cardinals farmhand Matt Parker (6-3) picked up the win after relieving Matt Childers in the fifth inning. Childers did not allow a Smokies hit through four innings in his first start of the season. Parker lost the no-hitter in the fifth on Moylan's leadoff single, but the Tennessee catcher was picked off third an out later.
The Smokies will face Huntsville Saturday for the third game of a four game series with the Stars. Julio Villalon (3-0, 1.95) will pitch against Mike Adams (3-4, 3.53) of the Stars.
