Mobile BayBears News Release

Birmingham, Ala. – One night after their best win of the season against Birmingham, the Mobile BayBears lost a heartbreaker to those same Barons Friday night. Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, the BayBears gave up two runs to the Barons and lost the game.

Reliever Bryan Gaal gave up a leadoff hit to pinch hitter Jon Hamilton. After a sacrifice bunt, Gaal gave up a game-tying double to former BayBear Gabe Alvarez. Following back-to-back walks, Tommy Nicholson broke the 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly to center.

The BayBears scored their lone run in the top of the third inning. Humberto Quintero led off the frame with a double off of Barons starter Enemencio Pacheco. Quintero scored as second baseman Tommy Nicholson threw wildly to first trying to retire Freddy Guzman.

"This was a very tough loss for us," BayBears manager Craig Colbert said. "Reed's catch in the eighth probably cost us two runs."

Barons' right fielder Jeremy Reed robbed Rico Washington of extra bases with two runners on for the second out of the eighth inning.

The loss wasted fine efforts by BayBears starter Roger Deago and reliever J.J Trujillo. Deago threw five and two-thirds scoreless innings. The left-hander allowed only five hits while striking out eight.

"I was very encouraged by Roger's outing," BayBears pitching coach Gary Lance said. "After walking three in the first inning, he came back and gave a chance to win the game."

Trujillo worked one and two-thirds hitless innings recording one punch out.

The BayBears and Barons both now travel to Mobile to begin a two-game series on Saturday. RHP Steve Watkins (5-4; 4.26) will get the start on the mound for Mobile. First pitch at Hank Aaron Stadium is set for 7:05.
