BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Mobile BayBears scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to take an amazing 8-6 victory from the Birmingham Barons in front of 2,733 fans on Thursday evening at the Hoover Met.

Heading into the ninth inning, the Barons held a 6-1 lead when Rob Purvis came on to relieve starter Byeong An. An had tossed eight superb innings giving up just one run on three hits before giving way to the bullpen. Purvis gave up a single to leadoff hitter Rico Washington, walked Jon Knott and gave up a single to Jake Gautreau before giving up a RBI single to Booby Scales and a bases clearing double to former Baron Danny Bravo. With the BayBears within a run at 5-6, Scott Dunn came on and gave up a RBI double to former Baron Humberto Quintero to tie the game. Ryan Meaux gave up a two run double to Rico Washington later in the game to give Mobile the lead.

Birmingham dominated the game early on with An throwing darts and the bats cracking out hits. Carlos Maldonado started the scoring off with an RBI double in the second and later scored on a double by Josh Shaffer to take the early 2-0 lead.

Jon Hamilton tripled and scored on a Gabe Alvarez sac fly in the third to make the score 3-0 before Mobile plated their first run in the sixth on a Washing RBI groundout. In the bottom of the sixth, Scott Bikowski hit a sac fly before Maldonado rocked his third homer of the season to make the score 6-1.

The short two-game series concludes tomorrow with the Barons sending out RHP Enemencio Pacheco (7-2, 2.68) to face LHP Roger Deago (6-5, 4.23). Game time is 7 PM with all the play-by-play on 101.1 FM with Curt Bloom on the call.
