G-Braves Edge Mudcats
July 11, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- The Greenville Braves returned the favor to the Carolina Mudcats Friday night in winning a sloppy Southern League game 6-4 a day after losing in a similar fashion. The G-Braves had only four hits to the Mudcats' eight, but capitalized on a four run seventh inning to win game two of the four game series.
The Mudcats took the early lead in the top of the first off of G-Braves starter Daniel Curtis. Billy Hall drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and then home on a groundout by Matt Padgett.
As the skies threatened so did the G-Braves in the bottom of the second. Lee Evans picked up the first hit of the game off of Mudcats starter Trevor Hutchinson with a two-out single to center. Cory Aldridge followed with an infield single, but J.C. Boscan grounded out to second to end the threat. Between innings, the rains came and a 52-minute rain delay insued.
After the tarp was lifted, Carolina upped the score to 2-0 as Padgett brought in Hall for the second time in the game, this time with a double.
The G-Braves got their first run of the game in the sixth. Ramon Castro drew a walk and scored on a James Jurries double down the right field line. In the following inning, Greenville erupted for four runs in an inning eerily reminiscent of the way in which they had lost the game the night before. Four runs were scored on only one hit as nine batters came to the plate. Mudcat pitching issued three walks, hit a batter, and fell victim to an error by third baseman Drew Niles.
Roman Colon (8-3) pitched two innings of relief to get the win, and Billy Sylvester picked up his eighth save of the season by getting the final three outs. Ryan Baker (3-2) took the loss.
