Montgomery, Ala.- Tony Pena picked up his third straight win after starting the season 0-6 and Noochie Varner drove in the winning run in the eighth as Tennessee won it's eighth straight road game 3-2 at Montgomery Tuesday night.

Tennessee (1-0, 34-37) starter Tony Pena was cruising heading into the sixth. Pena allowed only two baserunners and faced the minimum number of batters through the first five. In the sixth, however, Chairon Isenia and Shawn Riggans hit consecutive home runs to tie the game at 2-2.

Varner delivered the last of three straight Smokies singles in the ninth inning, scoring Jamie D'Antona from second on a bloop single to left against Scott Autrey (3-8).

Casey Daigle earned his sixth save over the last eleven games and his eighth of the year by working a perfect ninth.

Tampa Bay starter Dewon Brazelton made his first pitching appearance since May 11. He threw 46 pitches - 31 for strikes - while holding Tennessee scoreless on 2 hits and striking out six. Brazelton, who failed to report to Triple A Durham three weeks ago, was making his first minor league appearance of the year.

The second game of the series is Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. eastern. LHP Clint Goocher (6-3, 4.93) will start for the Smokies against RHP Jamie Shields (1-2, 2.79).
