HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Tennessee Smokies shut-out the Montgomery Biscuits 3-0 to take the series opener at Riverwalk Stadium on Wednesday night.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx recorded his third win of the season with a dominant performance on the mound. He pitched seven innings while just allowing two hits and no runs in the game. Bibens-Dirkx got stronger as the game went on, as he retired the final seventeen batters he faced.

The Smokies took the first lead in the game in the top of the third inning. Josh Vitters began the inning with a single followed by an error that sent him to second. He advanced to third on a groundout by Steve Clevenger, then scored the first run of the game as he touched home plate on Marquez Smith's ground ball that was turned into a double play.

An error helped Tennessee add more runs in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Tony Campana hit a single and a throwing error by third baseman Matthew Sweeney helped score Smith and Vitters to extend the Smokies lead to 3-0.

Taking over for Bibens-Dirkx on the mound, David Cales pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Scott Maine recorded his fourth save of the season by pitching a scoreless bottom of the ninth. The Biscuits would get two runners on base against Maine, but he struck out Sweeney to end the game in a Smokies victory.

The Smokies out-hit the Biscuits 17 hits to three, and as a team left eight men on base. Blake Lalli and Steve Clevenger both had three-hit nights, with both players going 3-4 at the dish. Campana, Marwin Gonzalez, Russ Canzler, and Smith all had two-hit nights.

The clubs will play the second game of the series on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Tennessee will start right-hander Craig Muschko (2-1, 4.21 ERA) against Montgomery's Jeremy Hall (1-2, 3.51 ERA). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 eastern time, and fans can listen to the game on the Smokies Radio Network.
