Sevierville, Tenn. - Caonabo Cosme hit a solo home run and an RBI double and scored three times to lead Tennessee over Orlando by a score of 7-2 Thursday night in front of 3,001 fans at Smokies Park. The Smokies pitching staff, led by starter Josh Axelson (W, 3-2) held the Rays offense in check by leaving nine Rays runners stranded.
Cosme hit his first home run of the season's second half with two outs in the second inning off Rays starter Jason Cromer (L, 1-3) to put Tennessee up 1-0. Cosme was also plated in the fourth on an RBI single by Shaun Boyd to increase the lead to 2-0.
Orlando inched back in the game in the top of the sixth after an RBI double by Jonny Gomes scored Amado German. Axelson was relieved after five and two-thirds innings by Tyler Johnson, who got John-Paul Davis to pop to center allowing the Smokies to get out of a bases loaded jam preserving the 2-1 lead.
Tennessee loaded the bases in the bottom on the sixth and managed to bring home one more run on a Chris Weekly sac fly. Papo Bolivar followed with a two run double to put the game out of reach. They added a sixth run in the seventh when Cosme doubled in Bucky Jacobsen.
Tennessee continues its four game stint with Orlando Friday night at 7:15. Chris Narveson(4-1, 2.68) will pitch for the Smokies against Scott Autrey (3-3. 3.18). The Smokies will try to increase their Eastern Division lead as the playoffs near.
