Knoxville Smokies News Release
Jackson, TN - The Tennessee Smokies lost a 1-0 contest to the Jackson Generals on Friday night in Jackson. Tennessee held Jackson scoreless for 8.1 innings, but the Generals broke through with the game's lone run in the bottom of the ninth.
Despite holding the Generals to just two hits in the first 8.0 innings, Jackson was able to put runners in scoring position in the ninth inning. After a strikeout to start the inning, the Generals put runners on second and third with a single and a double. An intentional walk loaded the bases, and Jackson walked off with an RBI-single to earn a 1-0 win.
Thomas Hatch started on the mound for the Smokies. Hatch pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and three walks. He also struck out two in the start. It was the third shutout appearance for Hatch this season.
Wyatt Short relieved Hatch to start the seventh inning. Short threw a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two batters while not allowing a baserunner. Short handed the ball to Zach Hedges after the scoreless frame. Hedges pitched a scoreless frame of his own, adding one strikeout. Jake Stinnett was unable to continue the solid pitching, as he gave up the winning run in his 0.1 inning on the mound. He struck out one batter before taking his fifth loss of the season.
Tennessee and Jackson will meet for the third game of the series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET. Michael Rucker (7-5, 3.84 ERA) is slated to start at pitcher for Tennessee and Justin Donatella (5-6, 3.51 ERA) is projected to oppose him for the Generals. Rucker is coming off 5.0 innings of one-run baseball against the Lookouts on July 28. He is holding batters to a .211 batting average in night games this season. Rucker threw 4.0 scoreless frames against the Generals on July 4.
