BayBears Surge Ahead Early, Take Series Opener from Barons

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, scored seven runs in the first five innings and defeated the Birmingham Barons 8-4 in the series opener Thursday night at Regions Field.

Five BayBears (53-54 overall, 16-23 second half) players had multi-hit games, including Roberto Baldoquin who had a three-hit night. He drove in three runs, with two coming on a single in the first inning.

After plating three runs in the first, Jose Rojas added to the lead with a two-run homer off Tanner Banks (2-3). It was Rojas' team-high 15th home run, and he finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Joe Gatto tossed four scoreless innings, and Daniel Procopio (1-2) earned the win in relief. Mobile grabbed a 7-0 lead through four and a half innings, and the Barons (54-55, 22-19) could pull no closer than within four runs.

The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Birmingham Friday at 7:05 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Jose Rodriguez (6-9, 5.66 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Alec Hansen (0-4, 6.56 ERA) for the Barons.
