August 26, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
Zebulon, NC - The Smokies managed to keep pace with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx thanks to their second come-back win in the ninth as they downed the Mudcats 2-1. Tennessee improves their record to 32-28, while Carolina falls to 21-39. The loss, in front of 1,706 fans at Five County Stadium, eliminates the Mudcats from the Southern League post-season.
Russ Canzler provided the difference in the game when he lined a two-RBI double into deep centerfield with one out in the ninth. The knock scored both Ty Wright and Starlin Castro from first and gave the Smokies their first lead of the game.
David Cales (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth inning in the victory. Brian Schlitter (S, 20) worked two outs to earn the save.
The ninth inning heroics by Tennessee spoiled a brilliant night for Mudcats' south paw Alexander Smit. Smit (3-3) held Tennessee scoreless for seven innings while scattering for hits. He struck out six Smokies and walked three.
Carolina took an early 1-0 lead thanks to some timely hitting against Smokies starter Casey Coleman. After Sean Henry drew a leadoff walk and stole second, Logan Parker brought him around on a sharp single to center.
That would be all the damage the Mudcats could muster. Coleman pitched six strong innings, allowing the one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Tennessee returns to Smokies Park on August 28 for five games against the Mobile BayBears. The series will span August 28-September 1, highlighted by 80's Night on August 30. Tennessee is the AA-affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Mobile is that of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tickets can be purchased by calling 286-2300 or by visiting www.smokiesbaseball.com.
