BayBears Scorch Suns in Series Finale

Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - A rampant offensive performance from the BayBears on Wednesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, highlighted by Evan Frey's five-hit explosion, in a 12-2 romping of the Jacksonville Suns.

Frey picked up the BayBears (62-68, 25-35) from the get-go with a first-inning infield single that turned into a run thanks to a throwing error, a passed ball and a groundout off the bat of Mark Hallberg to make it 1-0.

Jacksonville (75-55, 40-20) quickly knotted the score against Barry Enright (10-8) as Mike Stanton creamed his 14th home run of the season just to left of straightway center. Enright then coughed up a single, double and base on balls to load the bases with one away but worked out of trouble with consecutive strikeouts. From there, Enright was a monster for the BayBears with a season-nine punch outs in the ballgame, limiting the Suns to just a run on six hits.

Offense certainly wasn't a problem either for the home team as they grabbed the advantage for good in the bottom of the second with Orlando Mercado doubling home Bryan Byrne. After Pete Clifford singled, Jarrett Santos (4-3) almost got off the hook, recording a couple outs, but Frey burst Santos' bubble with a two-run, two-bagger down the third base line.

Santos was only charged for one more tally against him as he left the contest with one out in the sixth. Hallberg singled home Chris Rahl against reliever A.J. Battisto to put the BayBears up by four.

In the seventh, the BayBears blew the game wide open with a seven spot, mostly against Brett Harker who couldn't record an out against the six batters he faced. Clifford started the scoring frenzy with a two-run double to bring home Ricardo Sosa and Byrne. Pinch-hitter Cyle Hankerd also doubled in two runs to make it 9-1.

Frey wasn't done creating highlights as his RBI single made it 10-1 while Sosa's two-run double put the BayBears in front by 11. Roque Mercedes and Jordan Norberto combined for the last six outs out of the BayBears' pen with Norberto allowing a run in the ninth.

The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They kick off a five-game series at Smokies Park on Friday night to take on the Tennessee Smokies at 6:15 central time with Bryan Augenstein (5-0, 0.89) getting the start. The BayBears are back at "The Hank" for the final homestand which starts on Thursday, September 3 at 7:05 against the Montgomery Biscuits.
