
First place Jaxx win third straight over Barons

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 26, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (33-27) win again on Wednesday afternoon, 9-5, and take four of five from the Birmingham Barons (36-24). The Jaxx win their third straight game and maintain first place in the North Division over Tennessee and Chattanooga. Nick Hill's string of three consecutive complete games ended on Wednesday, settling for a no decision through six innings. Jose Yepez hit his first Diamond Jaxx homer in the victory and Marshall Hubbard went deep for the 14th time. Hubbard also doubled twice and finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. David Espinosa collected another multi-hit game for the Jaxx, posting a 2-for-4 ball game with three batted in as well. The Jaxx win the season series against the Barons 8-7.
The Barons began the scoring in the top of the second inning on Wednesday afternoon as Lee Cruz drove home Lee Gallagher with an RBI double to left. The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 advantage.
The Jaxx rallied back in the bottom of the third, striking for two long balls in the inning. Catcher, Jose Yepez, in his second stint with the Jaxx this season, opened the inning with a solo homer to left field. Later in the inning, Marshall Hubbard blasted his 14th homer of the season. Mel Stocker singled earlier in the inning and scored on the two-run homerun by Hubbard. The Jaxx took their first lead of the game, 3-1 after three.
In the fourth, the Barons David Cook and Dayan Viciedo smacked back-to-back doubles down the left field line. The two bagger by Viciedo scored Cook, cutting the D-Jaxx lead to 3-2.
West Tenn increased their lead over the Barons in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by David Espinosa. Callix Crabbe scored on the single, after doubling down the right field line. The Jaxx added one more in the fifth as Matt Mangini scored on a sacrifice fly by Johan Limonta. The Jaxx extended their lead to 5-2.
David Cook and Lee Cruz each went deep for Birmingham in the top of the sixth inning, trimming West Tenn's lead to 5-4. Then, in the top of the seventh the Barons pulled back even with the Jaxx on an RBI single by C.J. Retherford. The game was notched at 5-5.
Nick Hill left the game in the sixth inning with a no decision. Hill worked six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while walking one and fanning four. The five runs allowed by Hill was the most he has surrendered in a game this season. The outing also breaks the string of three consecutive complete games for Hill.
The Jaxx began the bottom of the seventh with a double by Ezequiel Carrera. Matt Mangini moved Carrera to third on a ground out and scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Marshall Hubbard. David Espinosa then tallied his second and third RBI of the game bringing in Hubbard and Limonta. The Jaxx re-took the lead 8-5, after the seventh.
The Jaxx added one more insurance run in the eighth as Matt Mangini brought in Mel Stocker with a sacrifice fly. The Jaxx entered the ninth with a 9-5 lead. Joe Newby (1-1) earned his first win of the season for West Tenn, dealing two scoreless frames on two hits.
Eric Hull worked a scoreless ninth inning, securing the Jaxx 9-5 win over the Barons.
The Jaxx will battle the Mississippi Braves on Friday, after enjoying a day off on Thursday. The Jaxx will send out LHP Robert Rohrbaugh (2-3, 2.63) to make the game one start as West Tenn battles the Braves for the 22nd time this season. The Jaxx hold an 11-10 series advantage.
